1. What is AviClear?
AviClear is the first and only laser technology approved by the US FDA specifically for acne treatment. AviClear uses a high-specificity laser with a wavelength of 1726 nm to selectively target the sebaceous glands, which are the main root cause of acne. This permanently reduces the glands’ oil (sebum) production, leading to long-term acne reduction and improved skin quality without the need for medication or significant pain.
2. Is AviClear truly effective for acne?
Yes. Because AviClear addresses the core mechanism of acne development, the results are highly sustainable. Clinical studies show that over $97\%$ of treated patients experienced continuous acne reduction, with results lasting up to 1–2 years or more after completing the recommended three sessions.
It is effective for all skin types and treats acne vulgaris at every stage: mild, moderate, and severe.
Research findings after completing 3 sessions:
Inflammatory acne reduced by over half.
80% reduction at 3 months, 87% at 6 months, and 92% at 12 months.
Total inflammatory lesion count reduced by over 98%$ at 6 months post-treatment.
97% achieved at least a 1-grade improvement in the IGA (Investigator Global Assessment) score.
66% had minimal to no breakouts one year later.
Non-inflammatory acne (clogged pores/blackheads) reduced by 57% at 1 year.
3. How many AviClear sessions are needed to see results?
According to research, the standard recommendation is 3 sessions, spaced 2–5 weeks apart. Results begin to appear in 4 weeks and are most significant at 12–26 weeks. (Follow-up data after 3 completed sessions shows sustained and improving results over 2 years.)
4. How long do the AviClear results last?
The results demonstrate a “progressive improvement”—meaning the skin continues to get better after the three sessions are complete. Results have been reported to be continuously improved and sustained for up to 2 years.
5. Why is the 1726nm wavelength important?
Because sebum (the oil within the sebaceous glands) has a peak absorption at $1726\text{ nm}$ that is higher than that of water molecules. This means the laser:
Directly targets the sebaceous glands. When oil production decreases, acne reduces.
Minimizes side effects. The laser’s high specificity minimizes impact on the surrounding skin, making it safe even for dark skin tones or sensitive, irritated skin.
Reduces excess heat in the dermal layer.
6. Is AviClear painful? Is numbing cream necessary?
Numbing cream is not necessary.
The average pain level is only 5/10.
The device incorporates an integrated contact cooling system ($0–5^\circ\text{C}$) to keep the treatment comfortable.
7. What is the recovery process like?
There are no open wounds and no scabs.
Expected symptoms: Mild redness, slight swelling, and potentially some purging (temporary breakouts) in some patients. These symptoms improve within a few days.
PIH (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation) or dark marks have not been reported.
8. Is AviClear suitable for dark skin tones (Skin types IV–VI)?
Yes, research clearly states:
It is safe for all skin tones, including darker skin. No cases were dropped from the study due to adverse side effects.
This is because melanin (the pigment responsible for dark skin) absorbs very little of this specific wavelength.
9. How does AviClear differ from older acne lasers?
Older lasers 1450nm, 1540, PDT often caused:
Significant pain.
High side effects, such as erythema (redness), blistering, and PIH.
AviClear uses a wavelength that is more precisely absorbed by sebum and incorporates superior cooling. This provides results that are comparable to or better than older technologies, but with less pain and increased safety.
10. Can AviClear really be compared to Isotretinoin (Accutane)?
Isotretinoin (Roaccutane) is well-known for reducing acne and preventing future breakouts. To prevent acne long-term, patients need to receive a cumulative dose:
A dose of 120-150mg/kg provides a $60–80\%$ chance of long-term clearance (tracked over 1–2 years).
A higher dose of 150-200 mg/kg reduces the relapse rate to only 10–20%
However, as is well-known, this medication has significant side effects: it is strictly prohibited during pregnancy and can cause changes in blood lipids and liver function. Other side effects include dry skin, dry eyes, and even depression. These severe side effects do not occur if you choose AviClear treatment.

Who should inform their doctor before AviClear treatment?
Tell your provider if you are pregnant, receiving treatment for skin cancer, taking or recently took isotretinoin or anticoagulants, or have inflammatory skin conditions, a history of keloids, pigment disorders, herpes, open wounds, or metal or electronic implants. Your doctor should review your medical history before treatment.
What side effects may occur after AviClear?
Temporary discomfort, redness, swelling, dryness, or an acne flare may occur. Less common risks can include blistering, scabbing, pigment changes, infection, or scarring. Reactions vary, so follow your provider’s aftercare instructions and contact the clinic if symptoms are severe or persistent.
Should acne medication or skincare be stopped before treatment?
Do not stop prescription acne medication on your own. Tell your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and skincare products you use. Your provider will advise whether anything should be paused or adjusted before treatment. Topical anesthetic should not be used with AviClear unless specifically directed by the treating physician.
Can AviClear treat acne scars?
AviClear is intended to treat inflammatory acne rather than serve as a dedicated acne-scar treatment. Controlling active acne may help reduce the risk of new scars, but existing scars may require a separate treatment plan after your skin has been assessed.
How do I know whether AviClear is suitable for my acne?
Suitability depends on the type and severity of your acne, your health and medication history, your current skin condition, and your treatment goals. A consultation with a qualified doctor is needed to confirm whether AviClear is appropriate for you.
