Mole Assessment and Skin Cancer Screening
While most moles are benign, some pigmented lesions may require closer evaluation. Changes in size, shape, color, border irregularity, bleeding, itching, or the development of a new lesion should be assessed by a dermatologist.
At ProDerma Clinic, dermatologists can perform a detailed skin examination and evaluate suspicious lesions before recommending removal. In selected cases, further investigation or biopsy may be recommended to establish a definitive diagnosis.
Early detection is important because some skin cancers, including melanoma, may initially resemble a common mole. Not every pigmented lesion requires removal, but lesions with unusual features should be assessed by a qualified dermatologist.
The ABCDE Rule for Mole Assessment
Dermatologists often use the ABCDE criteria when evaluating pigmented lesions:
- A – Asymmetry: One half does not match the other
- B – Border: Irregular, blurred, or uneven edges
- C – Color: Multiple colors or uneven pigmentation
- D – Diameter: Larger than 6 mm or increasing in size
- E – Evolution: Any recent change in appearance
If any of these features are present, professional evaluation is recommended.
Skin cancer screening and mole evaluation are performed by dermatologists. Additional investigations may be recommended depending on clinical findings.
Send a Photo for a Preliminary Assessment
You may send clear photos of the lesion through LINE so our team can provide initial guidance before your visit.
A photograph cannot confirm a diagnosis or replace an in-person examination. The dermatologist may recommend dermoscopic assessment, biopsy or another investigation before removal.
| Treatment Method | Best Suited For | Clinical Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| CO₂ Laser | Small, superficial benign moles considered appropriate by the dermatologist | Small wound with relatively quick healing |
| Electrocautery | Selected superficial skin lesions | Treatment depends on the type and location of the lesion |
| Surgical Excision | Deep, large, or clinically suspicious moles | May require sutures and, when clinically indicated, tissue examination |

Mole Removal FAQ
Is mole removal painful?
Local anesthetic is commonly used before removal. Patients may feel the injection briefly and some pressure during the procedure. Mild tenderness can occur afterward. Individual experiences vary.
Will mole removal leave a scar?
Any procedure that removes skin can leave a mark or scar. Its appearance depends on the mole’s size, depth and location, the chosen technique, wound care and individual healing. The dermatologist will discuss the expected result before treatment.
Can a mole grow back after removal?
Recurrence is possible when mole cells remain beneath the skin, particularly after a superficial removal. If pigmentation or growth returns, arrange a dermatologist review rather than treating it yourself.
Does every removed mole need laboratory testing?
Not every lesion requires histopathology. Testing may be recommended when a mole has suspicious features, is changing, or when the diagnosis needs confirmation. The dermatologist decides after examination and according to the removal method.
How much does mole removal cost?
Price depends on the number, size, depth and location of the lesions, the treatment method, and whether tissue examination is required. An accurate quotation is provided after medical assessment.
Aftercare Guide: How to Care for Your Skin After Mole Removal
Proper post-procedure care is crucial to prevent infection, speed up healing, and minimize scarring. Depending on the technique used during your treatment, please follow the specific instructions below.
1. Laser Mole Removal Care
Best for superficial lesions and cosmetic concerns.
Keep the site dry & protected: Avoid washing or wetting the treated area for the first 24 hours.
Apply prescribed ointment: Keep the area lightly coated with prescribed antibiotic ointment or petroleum jelly to promote smooth healing without scab formation.
Sun protection: Once the skin closes, apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily. Freshly lasered skin is very sensitive to hyperpigmentation.
Do not pick scabs: A small brown crust or scab may form within a few days. Allow it to fall off naturally—never scratch or peel it off.
2. Shave Excision Care
Best for raised lesions protruding above the skin surface.
Wound protection: Keep the protective bandage clean and dry for at least 24 hours.
Moist wound healing: Gently clean the wound daily with mild soap and warm water (after 24 hours). Reapply ointment and cover with a sterile bandage to prevent a thick scab from forming.
- Apply prescribed ointment: Keep the area lightly coated with prescribed antibiotic ointment or petroleum jelly to promote smooth healing without scab formation.
Prevent scarring: Keep the area covered and moist until new skin forms (usually within 7–10 days).
Avoid friction: Avoid tight clothing or rubbing over the area while it heals.
3. Surgical Excision Care (With Sutures)
Best for deeper lesions requiring complete removal and stitches.
STRICT NO-WATER RULE: Do NOT get the incision or stitches wet until cleared by your doctor. Protect the area with a waterproof cover when showering.
Protect the stitches: Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or any movement that pulls on the skin around the wound to prevent stitches from popping.
Keep bandage intact: Leave the original clinical dressing on as instructed. If it gets dirty or wet, replace it carefully with a clean, dry sterile bandage.
Suture removal (ตัดไหม): Return to the clinic in 7 to 10 days (or as scheduled by your doctor) to have your stitches safely removed.
🚨 When to Contact the Clinic Immediately
Regardless of the treatment method used, please contact our medical team right away if you notice:
- Active Bleeding: Bleeding that does not stop after 20 minutes of firm, direct pressure.
- Signs of Infection: Increasing redness, swelling, warmth, or red streaks spreading from the site.
