Laser Hair Removal: Pre-Treatment Preparation and Aftercare Guide
Laser hair removal is a popular and effective method for achieving long-term hair reduction. To ensure the best possible results and reduce the risk of irritation or unwanted side effects, proper preparation before treatment and correct aftercare are essential.
This guide explains how to prepare for your laser hair removal session and how to care for your skin afterward.
How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal
1. Avoid Sun Exposure
Stay out of direct sunlight for at least 1–2 weeks before your appointment. Activities such as sunbathing, beach trips, or outdoor sports can make your skin more sensitive and increase the risk of side effects.
2. Stop Using Whitening and Active Skincare Products
Discontinue the use of products containing AHA, Vitamin A, or other active ingredients that may cause skin sensitivity. If you’re planning to treat the underarm area, stop using deodorants or antiperspirants before your session.
3. Delay Treatment if You Have Skin Irritations
If the treatment area has a rash, wound, or infection, wait until your skin is fully healed before undergoing laser hair removal.
4. Avoid Waxing or Plucking for 2–4 Weeks
These methods remove hair from the root, which is necessary for the laser to target effectively. Shaving is recommended instead.
5. Shave in Advance (Optional)
Our staff can shave the area before treatment, but if you choose to do it yourself, shave at least 2–3 days in advance to avoid skin irritation.
6. Inform the Clinic About Medical Conditions or Medications
Let your provider know if you have any health conditions or are taking regular medications, including topical or oral treatments from other clinics.
7. Follow Your Treatment Schedule
Do not undergo laser sessions more frequently than recommended. Over-treatment may cause skin damage or reduced effectiveness.
Aftercare Tips for Laser Hair Removal
1. Avoid Deodorants and Fragranced Products (Underarm Treatment)
Do not use any deodorants or antiperspirants for 2–3 days after treatment to avoid irritation.
2. Avoid Products with Active Ingredients
Refrain from using skincare products that contain AHA, glycolic acid, retinoids, or whitening agents on the treated area. If you’re unsure about a product, consult your provider.
3. Avoid Sun Exposure After Treatment
Stay away from sun exposure for at least 2 weeks. Activities like swimming, golfing, road trips, and going to the beach should be postponed.
4. Avoid Heat Treatments
Do not use saunas, steam rooms, or take part in hot yoga for 2–3 days following treatment.
5. Soothe the Skin If Needed
You may experience mild redness or sensitivity within the first 24–48 hours. Use a cold compress to ease discomfort. If you notice blisters, severe redness, or swelling, contact the clinic immediately.
6. Shave Only – Do Not Pluck
If new hair appears between sessions, only shave. Do not wax or pluck, as this can interfere with the treatment process.
7. Let Hair Shed Naturally
Treated hair may not fall out immediately. Shedding typically occurs 2–3 weeks after the session. Do not try to pull the hair out.
8. Avoid Scratching or Exfoliating the Area
Be gentle with your skin. Avoid rubbing, scrubbing, or scratching the treated area to prevent irritation and inflammation.
9. Continue Treatments as Recommended
Laser hair removal requires multiple sessions to achieve optimal results. Most patients need at least 5 sessions, spaced 1–2 months apart.
