What is the Mounjaro Pen ?
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a prescription medicine from Eli Lilly that activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors. It is given as a weekly injection under the skin.
Approved uses differ by country. In the United States, Mounjaro is approved for type 2 diabetes. Ask your doctor about the approved indication, expected benefits and suitability of the product prescribed to you in Thailand.

Mechanism of Action of the Mounjaro Weight Loss Pen
Tirzepatide activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Its effects include glucose-dependent insulin release, reduced food intake and delayed gastric emptying. It is not a treatment for removing fat from a chosen body area.
Clinical Research Findings
In SURMOUNT-1, 2,539 adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related complication, received tirzepatide or placebo for 72 weeks alongside lifestyle measures. People with diabetes were excluded.
Average weight reduction was 15.0% with 5 mg, 19.5% with 10 mg and 20.9% with 15 mg, compared with 3.1% with placebo. These are group averages, not predicted results for an individual. The trial included gradual dose escalation; these were not starting doses.
How Does Tirzepatide Compare with Semaglutide?
SURMOUNT-5 directly compared weekly tirzepatide (maximum tolerated dose 10 or 15 mg) with weekly semaglutide (1.7 or 2.4 mg) in adults with obesity without type 2 diabetes. At 72 weeks, mean weight reduction was 20.2% with tirzepatide and 13.7% with semaglutide.
This was an open-label trial. Its findings apply to the studied doses and population, and do not predict individual results. They cannot be assumed to apply to every semaglutide product or dose.

Using the Mounjaro Pen
- Inject subcutaneously once a week into the abdomen, upper arm, or thigh.
- Start with a dosage of 2.5 mg per week for 4 weeks. The dosage may then be increased to 5 mg, and adjusted by 2.5 mg every 4 weeks, up to a maximum dosage of 15 mg.
- If a dose is missed by no more than 4 days, inject it as soon as it is remembered. However, if more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose and inject the next dose on the regularly scheduled day.
- Do not share the pen with others, even if the needle is changed, to prevent infection.
- It should be used under the supervision of a doctor to prevent side effects such as nausea, vomiting, or excessive loss of appetite.
Potential Side Effects of Mounjaro Pen
Common side effects
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, decreased appetite, indigestion, or abdominal discomfort.
- Injection-site redness, swelling, or itching may occur.
Symptoms requiring urgent medical attention
- Difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat; dizziness or fainting.
- Severe or persistent abdominal pain, especially if it radiates to the back, which may indicate pancreatitis.
- Symptoms of gallbladder problems, severe dehydration, or markedly reduced urination.
Important safety information
- Do not use tirzepatide if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
- Tell your doctor if you have a history of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, severe gastrointestinal disease, diabetic retinopathy, or kidney problems.
- The risk of low blood sugar may increase when tirzepatide is used with insulin or a sulfonylurea.
- Tell the medical team before surgery, sedation, or general anaesthesia because tirzepatide delays gastric emptying.
Seek urgent medical advice for severe symptoms. Do not change or stop prescribed medication without instructions from your treating doctor unless emergency personnel advise otherwise.
Who is Mounjaro Pen suitable for?
These BMI thresholds are commonly used when assessing medical weight-management options; they do not confirm that Mounjaro is appropriate for every person:
- Adults with a BMI of 30 or higher.
- Adults with a BMI of 27 or higher who also have a weight-related health condition.
- People who have not achieved adequate results with lifestyle measures and who are willing to take part in ongoing medical follow-up.
Approved indications differ by country. Eligibility, medicine choice, and dose require an individual assessment by the prescribing doctor.
Who is Mounjaro Pen not suitable for?
- Do not use tirzepatide if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any ingredient in the product.
- Do not use it if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), or if you have MEN 2.
- Tirzepatide is not recommended during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or become pregnant during treatment.
- Discuss breastfeeding with your doctor before treatment because the appropriate decision depends on your circumstances.
- It is not recommended for anyone under 18 unless specifically prescribed within an approved local indication.
- Extra assessment is needed for a history of pancreatitis, severe gastrointestinal disease, gallbladder disease, diabetic retinopathy, or kidney problems.
Storage
These instructions refer to the multidose Mounjaro KwikPen. Follow the leaflet supplied with your exact product.
- Before use, refrigerate at 2–8°C. Do not freeze or use a pen that has frozen.
- The UK KwikPen instructions allow storage below or at 30°C for up to 30 days after first use.
- Discard after four weekly doses or 30 days after first use, whichever comes first. Do not extract leftover medicine.
The 21-day room-temperature allowance in US instructions applies to single-dose pens and vials, not to every Mounjaro presentation. For an unopened KwikPen taken out of refrigeration during travel, ask your pharmacist for product-specific advice.
